Locked out in Heerlen or Parkstad: what works and what does not?

You put the rubbish out and the door clicks shut behind you. It happens to everyone at some point. What you do in the first few minutes decides whether it takes a quarter of an hour or ends with a damaged door.

First check what is actually locked

See whether the door is only on the latch (it slammed shut) or double-locked (with the key turned). A door that slammed shut can almost always be opened without damage. A double-locked door is harder; a locksmith then often has to work through the cylinder.

Also check whether another way in is open: a back door, balcony door or a window left ajar. Never climb over a roof, drainpipe or the neighbours' balcony. A fall costs far more than a locksmith.

What you had better not do

A bank card between door and frame works in films, but rarely on modern doors with an anti-burglary strip. Mostly you damage the door trim. A screwdriver or crowbar turns a small job into a big one: the frame or lock gets damaged and then has to be repaired too.

Do not just call the first national number you find either. Some companies quote a low price on the phone and charge much more on site. Always ask for the total, including call-out fee and surcharge.

Rented home or flat

If you live in a flat with a shared front door, as in many blocks in Heerlerheide, Molenberg or Hoensbroek, the locksmith first gets you through the main entrance. If your landlord or housing association has an emergency number, call that too; sometimes they have a spare key. When you are locked out, you are free to call a locksmith yourself.

When to call and what it costs

Prevention is easier

Leave a spare key with someone nearby you trust, not under the mat or in a flower pot. A key safe with a code also works, but choose one with a quality mark and do not mount it right next to the door. And make a habit of having the key in your hand before you pull the door shut behind you.
